URGENT
PLEA TO
HELP CHRISTIAN IN AFGHANISTAN...!
A group of Afghan Christians living in exile in India have
issued an "urgent” plea to the international community to help
Christians still living in Afghanistan following the recent call for
their execution by a government minister.
The
letter was issued earlier in the month by a comm unity of 150 Afghan
converts now living as refugees in New Delhi because of the threat to
their lives in Afghanistan.
In the letter they urge Christians around the world to speak
out against the "egregious injustices” and "blatant human rights
violations” taking place against Christians in Afghanistan.
"We left our country because we were sentenced to death on
the account of our Christian faith … Christians are called pagans and
infidels and are sentenced to death by the Afghan Government. Death
penalty is waiting for all those who want to leave the darkness and come
to true light, repent from their sins, and put their faith on (sic)
the Lord Jesus Christ,” they wrote.
The letter is a response to the riots and demonstrations that
broke out in Afghanistan last month, after the independent channel
Noorin TV aired a documentary revealing the names and faces of supposed
Afghan Christian converts.
Protestors called on President Hamid Karzai to arrest and
execute the converts and the deputy secretary of the Afghan Parliament’s
Lower House, Abdul Sattar Khawasi, made his own call for the execution
of Christian converts from Islam.
The group go on to say that they have received reports of
Afghan Christians being arrested and having their homes and businesses
searched in recent weeks. There have also been reports that authorities
are torturing arrested Christians to force them to reveal the names of
other Christian converts and the location of underground churches and
fellowships.
They stated: "In light of all these events, and the
perplexing media silence on these atrocities occurring in plain view of
the international community, we are pleading with the Body of Christ
around the world to support our Afghan Christian brothers and sisters
during this critical time by taking a firm and vocal stand against the
severe and devastating wrongs being committed against them by their own
government!"
The execution call came just days after two Christian aid
groups were suspended after authorities accused them of proselytising.
Church World Service and Norwegian Church Aid cannot operate while
authorities investigate the claim. Both ministries deny any
wrongdoing.
CHRISTIAN ARRESTED IN MICHIGAN...!
The 15th annual Arab International Festival is being held
this weekend in Dearborn, Mich., where one of the largest Arab-American
populations in the United States resides. On Friday four Christian men
were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly trying
to convert Muslims attending festival events. According to a source I
contacted at the festival today, at least two of those arrested have
been released. One is a recent convert from Islam who caused controversy
at last year’s festival by getting into arguments with Muslims and
filming them.
According to this
report, "The group was criticized by the
city and residents for aggressively putting video cameras in the faces
of people at a festival that draws thousands of families.” Another
report called it "intense but respectful
dialogue” and said the police were catering to the city’s large Muslim
population.
Christians increasingly have been drawn to the festival as a
way to understand Arab culture, interact with Muslims, and hopefully
introduce gospel teaching to those interested. I’ve heard from several
groups and individuals who have attended the festival this week to
hand out literature and converse with Muslims.
It’s important to remember that many of the Muslims who live
in Dearborn are first- or second-generation immigrants who escaped
tyranny and terrorism themselves in the Arab world, yet often are
treated as terror suspects and ostracized in other ways here in the
United States. They need to hear the gospel—in terms that are winning
and respectful of their own culture. I’m looking forward to the release
later this summer of a book by Rosemary Sookhdeo called Breaking
Through the Barriers: Leading Muslims to Christ. I just finished
reading a galley proof, and it is full of good counsel from someone who
has spent decades living alongside Muslims in neighborhoods of East
London and elsewhere. She provides everything from a sound approach in
giving out the gospel, to the practical advice—such as why it’s more
acceptable to give food as a gift than flowers..
A coming War.
The article did not give reasoning for the
calling back of Phillipinos.
The Philippines Embassy in
Beirut - Lebanon released a warning today to all Philippine foreign
workers that work in Lebanon to leave Lebanon as soon as possible and to
all Philippine workers that plan to come to Lebanon to postpone there
travel to Lebanon " because of A Coming War in the very near future. "
